Strashnoto Ezero and traverse of Kupenite (one-day trekking)

JULY – AUG 2020

A challenging alpine tour full with adrenaline, breath-taking views with climbing of the highest peak in Northwest Rila.

Rila is the highest mountain in Bulgarian and in the Balkans. Its Northwest region has a typical alpine landscape. With its spectacular granite peaks in the area, this is a challenge for every mountain lover. Even that Northwest Rila is called after the emblematic peak Malyovitsa, its highest peak is Golyam (Big) Kupen (2731 m. asl.) with just 2 meters above Malyovitsa. It is in our “to do list” for today but definitely the accent is on the whole day we have prepared for you. One of our general objectives is to offer not standard mountain routes – this one fits perfectly in this category.

This program is suitable for people with previous mountain experience, good stamina and without fear of heights. If you are not sure if this program fits to you, we recommend to call us in advance and we will help you to make a decision. We do know that each good mountain experience starts with a proper route choice.

This program will be performed with minimum of 4 people.

Note: A list of required equipment will be sent to you right after you sign in for this program. If you don’t have anything from it, we may assist you to get it. The most important thing for us are suitable mountain shoes and your proper adventure mood.

Itinerary

Program
An early morning gathering in Sofia following by an 1:30 hour transfer to Maljovitsa parking lot. We grab our backpacks and are heading to the Fear Lake. This mesmerizing lake is situated just under the north faces of the Kupenite group. For many tourists this lake is their final destination but for us is just the beginning of our adventure. After a short break around its dark blue waters, we are going to climb Popova Kapa peak hanging over the Lake. From here we start our alpine traverse of the group of Kupenite – 4 fantastic granite peaks, the last one of which is the highest one – Golyam (Big) Kupen, 2731 m.asl. Some parts of the track are very steep, passing by vertical chutes which makes this traverse marvellous. We cannot find the proper words to describe all spectacular views around us – they are everywhere and want to let you feel them by yourself. It will not be exaggerated to say that this traverse is one of the most spectacular routes in the area and not only. From Golyam Kupen we continue following the main mountain ridge until we reach the next peak – Lovnitsa. From here we have dramatic views towards Zliya Zab and Dvuglav peaks which vertical climbing walls go down to the bottom of the deep valley of Rilska river. And if this is the last summit for today there is much more going down to the parking – you would definitely need strong legs. Late afternoon transfer to Sofia.
