High Altitude Fly Fishing for Trout in Bulgaria
OCT 2020
High altitude fly fishing for trout in one of the most fascinating and alpine mountains in Bulgaria and in the Balkans
Pirin mountain is the second highest in Bulgaria and definitely the most alpine one in the country. It is part of the same called National Park – one of the 3 in Bulgaria with more than 170 high altitude glacier lakes. Some of them are closed for fishing but many others are open. Fishing is allowed during weekends and national holidays with artificial lures and flies only. Dry fly fishing for brown trout above the three line in pristine nature is what this trip offers to you. Fishing season is short – it starts early June and closes end of September. July and September are the best months to be out there. It is recommended for you to be in a good physical shape for 2-3 hours hiking per day with your backpack.
We would recommend using a 4 to 6 wt – 9 to10 ft rod with a floating WF line to match. Leader needs to be long. Streamer fishing with sinking lines can also be effective if you are fan of it. This is important as the lakes are gin clear and fish can be really spooky. Waders are not necessary.
Apart from fishing we will be above 2000 m. asl. in the most attractive mountain in the country. Clean and pristine nature and breathtaking views are everywhere.
Accommodation: You may choose to sleep in a hut or in a tent. Bivouacking in Bulgarian national parks is only allowed near the huts so both options are pretty close each other. Please let us know in advance what is your choice in order to arrange whatever needed. If you choose to sleep in a tent but do not have your own bivouac equipment, you may rent it from us. The huts we plan to use in this program provides basic accommodation and food.
If you need additional accommodation in Sofia before and/or after the program, we may arrange this for you. Just let us know in advance. Prices are about 35 Euro for a double and 50 Euro for a single room in 3* hotels.
Food: Some of the meals will be in the huts and others – out in the nature. This would not be a problem having in mind that the program is pretty short and also having a picnic is tastier. This will depend also on weather condition based on which we will decide where to go. It is our job to do a food shopping in advance based on your own preferences which will be discussed with you after sign in. All required cooking equipment will be provided by us. Of course, you should bring some of the food in your back packs.
All this makes our fishing trip very special and a little bit adventurous compared to all other ones in our list.
This program will be guided by Stanislav Mankov – a world famous fly fisherman and definitely the best in the region. He gives a great rank to each of his tours and there is no doubt you will take a lot from his knowledge.
